History

Born in Emu Bay (Burnie) on 21 July 1856 to Thomas Hilder and Elizabeth Hayhoe who were pioneers of the Emu Bay region. He married Amelia, second daughter of Mr. James Hales, of Penguin Creek, in December, 1878. Richard was interested in local history, wrote a number of books and also wrote for the Burnie Advocate for a number of years.
