History

Mr Josiah Powell (1844-1906) well-known barrister and solicitor of Launceston died suddenly of a heart attack on the 27 August 1906.. He arrived in Tasmania with his family in 1854 from Bristol, U.K. and settled at Hadspen. He was educated at Church Grammer school and was later articled to the solicitor Mr R Byron Miller with whom he entered a partnership. He practiced for some time in Hobart but returned to Launceston and had a branch office in Beaconsfield. He married Margaret Annie Hepburn, eldest daughter of Robert Hepburn, Esq., of Bellbrook, Great Swanport on 26th October 1871.
